Welcome!

The Borzoi Club of America was formed on November 12, 1903 as the "Russian Wolfhound Club of America." This event took place at a meeting of exhibitors and other interested parties, held at the Brooklyn Bench Show.

An Executive Committee (consisting of Dr. J.E. De Mund, James Mortimer and Joseph B. Thomas) was appointed to form a constitution and breed standard, of which was approved at a meeting held during the Westminster Kennel Club show on February 4, 1904. The club was elected to membership in the American Kennel Club on May 19, 1904. The official breed standard was formally adopted in 1905 and is for the most part the same today, with some revisions having been made in 1940 and 1972.

The purpose of the club, per a letter penned by Joseph B. Thomas, was to "place the Russian Wolfhound, both as a working dog and as a "chien de luxe," first in popular esteem among the larger breeds."

In 1936, the breed's name was changed from Russian Wolfhound to Borzoi and the club's name was changed to its current moniker, the Borzoi Club of America.

The BCOA serves as the Borzoi breed guardian and is responsible for determining the official breed standard as well as encouraging the acceptance of that standard by its members and breeders, as well as judges.

The BCOA hosts a yearly National Specialty Show which can include Lure coursing, straight-racing (LGRA), and obedience events, as well as a triathlon event to highlight those versatile Borzoi. Rally obedience and agility are also sometimes featured. BCOA also sponsors trophy-supported events by request from its members.

BCOA engourages and supports the formation of independent regional Borzoi clubs. Ideally those clubs would fulfill the American Kennel Club's criteria for recognition and go on to host BCOA-sanctioned specialty events.

About This Site

The goal of this site is to provide a resource for current members and anyone who is interested in the Borzoi breed.

Several new items have been added during the redesign (March 2007) including a listing of those dogs inducted into the Versatility "Hall of Fame" (currently only 2006 inductees are listed and the rest will be posted once the information is received), and a listing of BCOA's Life Members. Plans for the future include listing those dogs that have won the Annual Versatility Award.

Please send any input you may have to the BCOA Webmaster.
