General Specials CRITIQUE by Mrs. Nadine Johnson:

What can I say!! Sixty one Champions lining the ring (plus the class and Veteran winners) were an awesome sight. It is impossible to describe the beauty and elegance of this imposing class but it was clear to all that our beloved breed has come a long way as everywhere one looked the first glance showed proper toplines and angulation, nice flowing lines all and a typical “BORZOI” look. How to find the right one for Best of Breed was a task beyond expectations .. .! wished I could have been on the sidelines watching. I decided to divide the class into manageable 10 to 12 dogs and keep 4 of each group, then make a second cut and a final selection. Out of these, four dogs strongly challenged the eventual winner, Ch. P.O.S.H. Echovesna’s Islaev. This nine-year-old multiple Specialty winner never put a foot wrong, never gave up showing, had a powerful reach and drive, a perfectly sound coming and going as well as effortless side gait and definitely did not show his age on the day. To this add a lovely outline and correct structure with excellent length of neck and good headpiece. My congratulations to “Sly” and his owner and breeder.

DOGS, 6 months and under 9 - CRITIQUE by Mrs. Nadine Johnson

Lovely puppies all around, this class was won by Welkin Scirocco, a nice youngster, sound with an already deep chest; he handled himself well and had good extension. A very promising pup. Second, Monarch Golden Boy, was as good a mover as Scirocco, was not quite as balanced, but has a lovely head and neck and should develop to expectations. Third, Taramont The Baron, a big strong puppy. Has a nice outline and sidegait but his front was very puppyish and did not know quite where to put his feet. Good head with a very dark eye. Woodcrk SW Winston of Chataqua, fourth, a growing puppy with good movement, strong bones and nice head with a gorgeous coat.

Always a difficult age and hard to judge, this class with many absent, held its own. First went to Majenkir Tsuperlative a very nicely put together dog who looked more mature than his age with excellent rear and front, sound coming and going. Second, Cavallino Alexander Bianco, also very sound of movement, a close second with perhaps a less pleasing head than Tsuperlative. Third, Jahdek’s Favorite Son, good strong puppy with a pleasing head and fourth Tamarzi Sergei Tzarksly another promising youngster.

First, Pollion Petrov of Pavlovna, very sound movement coming and going and gorgeous side movement and a beautiful coat and topline. Second, Sirius Vagabond of Khanzade, going through a growth period, was sound nevertheless and quite promising. Third, Qamyo Southern Style, a very good looking young man in good coat. Fourth, Aldemoor’s Even It Up, another promising junior.

This class was judged the previous day along with the bitch classes. First went to Seabury’s Chrisma a magnificent red dog, I had a hard time taking my eyes off him. Mature, with an excellent coat, sound as they come and a joy to watch going around the ring he deservedly won Winners Dog. Second, Majenkir Navron Mambrino also exuded quality but lacked the maturity of the first dog but had excellent angulation, balanced stifles and shoulders. This dog was Reserve Winners. Third, Royal R. Kazenova By Design, a big sound quality dog, perhaps not as elegant as the first two. Fourth, Nonsuch Kiyev, nice head marred by lighter eyes, nice extension of movement.

First, Tour de France Of The Wild Hunt, a very well-proportioned body, well balanced with good movement, head could be finer. Second, Kumasan’s Hunyack of Tradition, also of excellent quality was a little wider in the front, otherwise as good as the first. Third, Khanzade’s Urri of Sowagla, a handsome dog only lacked a little strength in front movement. Fourth, Nonsuch Krasan, a nice win at a Specialty where the best competed in this large class. Should do well in the future.

DOGS, Open - CRITIQUE by Mrs. Nadine Johnson

Twenty six strong, again was a joy to behold as so much quality was there as was in the Bred-By Exhibitor class. First, Rohnoke’s Ashton, a very well balanced, good mover, well presented dog was hard pushed by the Second place dog, Sky Run Winter Watch, again an outstanding mover, a little less mature than Ashton but with a lot of potential. Third, Iyengar’s Bistri of Turgenoff, another quality dog in a quality class is still very young and fourth, Khanzade Salute, a strong, good moving dog was somewhat overweight which affected his topline. Altogether 12 dogs made the cut and received the nice “I made the cut” memento.

BITCHES, 6 Months and Under 9 - CRITIQUE by Mrs. Nadine Johnson

As always, stole my heart. What sweet, gentle friendly little ladies they were. Out of a class of 19, first went to Silhouette Megan’s Namesake CD TD, a very pretty baby with black eyes, nice head, well balanced body; maturity will hopefully bring in a bit more neck length for her size, but above all she had superb, far-reaching gait which made her an easy winner, coming and going practically perfect. Second was won by Sylvan Evangeline, almost as good as Megan and has an excellent topline, movement, tail touching the ground. Third, Taramont the Baroness, caught my eye with her exquisite head, also a very correct topline, front and rear, movement good but not as free-flowing as the other two. Fourth was Pheasant Hill Oaklara’s Trufl, a beautiful bitch, sound and well conditioned was a tad less true coming back and a little heavier head.

Also 18 strong was won by Nonsuch Knockout at Zadira who was showing her heart out, a lovely black and white with an elegant outline, beautiful head, sound coming and going and nice side movement. Second was Qamyo Sylvan Scarlettan, a gorgeous bitch, everything you would want in a Borzoi, a very hard choice between her and number one with a side gait to die for but in the last she roached her back a bit and did not quite have her heart in it which was a very picky difference. Third was Sylvan Little Egypt, an appealing silver, black and white coat, sound and balanced; was a little straight in the pasterns at this difficult and growing age. Fourth was Sky Run Codie Grae, very well presented and in fine show coat, sound with a slight toe-in well deserved the placement.

Here were some of the best of the day, I would love to take some home with me ... and not just the first four. Of the 32 entered, 15 made the cut and were all of the highest quality. Too bad we do not have the French system of grading every entry as these 15 would all have an “Excellent” attached to the official results. First went to Sky Run Flying On My Own who well earns her name as she never faltered around the ring, a gorgeous bitch in outline with a lovely head; she was hard to fault and well deserved the win as well as the Winners Bitch award and Best Of Winners. Second won by Elmden’s Graceland d’Insight, a Canadian representative was equally lovely with a super side gait. It was a hard choice between those two but “Graceland” gave up towards the end, on such small details are placements made. She took Reserve Winners Bitch. Third was Falkenar Sunbarr Scitabria and fourth Nonsuch Standing Ovation, top quality both in that lovely class. I later was told that besides the Winner of the day, the second, third and fourth placements were all previous Specialty winners.

Nine grand old ladies who brought a tear to my eyes. Champions all, they enjoyed themselves and moved with that "look at me" expression. First place, Ch. Majenkir Orchid of Po Dusham was quality personified, with a much better coat than in her heyday, a little matronly perhaps but still sound and lovely. She also won Best Of Opposite Sex. Second, Ch. Sheyash-Deco Isadora D, in perfect condition, moved like the wind and strongly challenged the first place winner. Third, Ch. Sylvan Chelsea of Astafiev, CD, another obedience champion who did not show her age and fourth, Ch. Sorva of Windlord, at 12 years old, the veteran of veterans showed that the good ones keep going in style.

CONFORMATION JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Mrs. Nadine Johnson:

It was with much trepidation that I accepted to judge the National Specialty in Florida, April 3 and 4, 1991. Oh, well, thought I, it will be a rather small one, what with the distance, the war with Iraq, the high price of flying and gasoline. Then came the call from Shen Smith, our Show Secretary with the astounding news that the entries totaled 470 with 113 in Sweepstakes capably judged by Gwen Post, 22 in Obedience judged by Claire McClure and 3 in Junior Handling adjudicated by Vickie McCoy. The Futurity, Dyane Roth, judge, took place the day before, April 2, in what I was given to understand was a faerie setting, at night, under flood lights, in formal attire. I really missed not seeing those beautiful Borzoi with the fairy tale background.

The Silver Lake Lodge, in Ocala, Florida was the ultimate show place. With acres and acres of grass, a private lake, large rooms, many of which overlooked the rings, very helpful hotel personnel, excellent food and fair prices plus the weather cooperating, I could not think of a more perfect venue.

The regular and non-regular entry of 328 took place over two days in a large grassy ring with a huge tent erected for shade and inclement weather, which luckily, was not needed except for a few of the Triathlon dogs at the end of the show. From the very first class of 6 to 9 months puppy bitches to the grand finale of 61 champions, 10 stud dogs and 13 brood bitches, the quality of the 1991 Borzoi was unmistakable, the presentation of clean, beautifully groomed hounds a joy to behold. Overall the breeders can be very proud of their achievements as there were no "bad quality" representatives. Gone are the fiddle fronts, the cow-hocked rears and the wheel backs. Gone are the aggressive temperaments and only one or two were not too sure they wanted to be examined. Gone are the "empty" mouths. In my 20 years of close contact with the breed, the improvement is tremendous. The headpieces with lean, elegant outline, dark, expressive, well-shaped eyes were numerous.

Many had one of my favorite traits: a long, well curved graceful neck and I would like to see more of them; this is one area of improvement as it is as functional as it is cosmetically necessary. Layback of shoulder was average with some outstanding exceptions and, unfortunately, some very straight ones. Toplines were quite pleasing with only a couple of overdone backs but quite a few lacking the "gentle rise over the loins" which is one of the Borzoi characteristics. Hindquarters were EXCELLENT throughout, a real achievement and I was most impressed by their quality; most were in good, hard muscled condition, some couch potato syndromes could have used more exercising.

Tails and fronts are the only disappointing areas; too many high and/or ring tails spoiled the otherwise excellent outline of the Borzoi in full trot. And last: the fronts. Stacked, the legs were straight, neither turning in nor out, but not always with the correct bend of pastern; a few down in the pasterns but the main fault seems to lie in too straight ones. It was positively frustrating to think "Oh, this gorgeous boy (or girl) is sure to make the cut" and then having them come back at you knitting and pearling, crossing over or flying away to the sides. This did not stop them from having a perfectly lovely side gait. I will always forgive SLIGHTLY turning in feet, coming back to the judge; all wild animals, from cheetahs to wolves do it when coming to the camera, but cannot pass over the more faulty front movement. On the other hand, the beautiful side movement, with that reach and drive, coat flowing, head held correctly was present in all the winners and many, many more.

With such excellent quality, my only sadness and regret is that too few ribbons were available. Right offhand I can think of some "Certificates of Merit" I would have dearly loved to give and which would have been richly deserved. (To Ch. Oaklara's Elegante Tara: my mistake ... I thought I had one more to award!) Also to both Reserve winners, first place Bred-By bitch, SarShanSa's Prophetess and second place Veteran bitch, Ch. Sheyash-Deco Isadora D. and many more.

I want to thank the Borzoi Club of America, Inc., the President, Mrs. Gwen Post and all the members, especially my stewards, Dr. Asa and Karen Mays and the Florida members who worked so hard to put on a perfect show as well as the hard-working Secretary Shen Smith.

This was my hardest class to judge as the quality was strong and it extended well beyond the four placing bitches. /p>

1 - Sky Run Osen Zolotiya - Lovely moving bitch. Good outline and expression. She also has a nice and easy gait. /p>

2 - Sky Run Codie Grae - Again a lovely hitch with good shoulders and expression. She played a bit at the end. /p>

3 - Sky Run Flying On My Own - Nice sound moving bitch. Well balanced, good outline and expression, however she did not "ask" for the win like the first and second place winners. /p>

4 - Sylvan Little Egypt - Lovely bitch; she is a sound moving female and has a nice outline.

SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Mrs. Gwen Post:

It was quite an honor and a privilege to judge the 1991 BCOA Sweepstakes. In my wildest dreams I never expected an entry of 113 puppies.

The show site was on the grounds of the motel, which served as specialty headquarters. The Silver Lake Lodge was a lovely setting and the motel's personnel were a pleasure to work with. The ring was quite spacious and lovely. Since it was a grass ring, footing was not a problem. The group who had worked to put on this specialty had really overcome a lot of last-minute problems and had outdone themselves to make this specialty a really wonderful and beautiful specialty. They deserve a heartfelt thank you from all who attended.

Overall the puppies were well presented. They were clean, well groomed and in good condition. There were a lot of promising puppies in the entry and there were some who show the potential to become really top-notch Borzoi.

I had a lot of nice moving animals but I saw a lot of animals that were toeing in both standing and moving. I believe that a Borzoi should single track but there is a major difference in single tracking and toeing in.

Rears on the whole were good but there were some overangulated as well as straight rears. Fronts were another matter. There were far too many straight shoulders and fronts set "too far forward." In some cases these dogs could still move on these fronts but the assembly is incorrect.

Standing I saw only a few puppies that toed out but as I said before I saw a lot that toed in. I also saw very few that tended to be cowhocked but I did see several that exhibited the tendency to have the hocks point out and the toes point in.

Heads varied but most were within the acceptable limits of the standard; but there were several with entirely too much fill in front of the eyes. Bites on the vast majority of the entry were good with only one or two in the older classes having "popped teeth." Missing teeth were not a problem, as I only saw a few puppies that had one tooth missing and I only recalled two older puppies who had several missing.

Toplines on the whole were good but a few did have somewhat of a steep fall-away. For the most part though I feel that the entry was quite good and shows much promise for the future.

I will go through the classes in the order that they were judged.

My choice for Best In Sweepstakes was a really difficult decision as the movement was very good in my eight class winners.

I chose Sky Run's Top Brass due to both his movement and his overall appearance of a well-balanced dog.

For my Best Of Opposite Sex to Best In Sweepstakes I chose Sky Run Osen Zolotiya. Again I was drawn to her movement and her overall appearance of a well balanced bitch.
