General Specials CRITIQUE by Helen W. Lee:

I did not make notes on my final placements as there just wasn't time. Suffice to say that I would have taken any one of them home with me. :>) What a beautiful group of Borzoi! All the people involved (breeders, owners, trainers - everyone!) are to be complimented on having excellent breeding programmes.

I was pleased to discover that a good number of the top placements went to Borzoi who excel in more than just conformation, which I suppose makes sense because I was checking on the entries' condition. :>) I'm not sure why the winner of Select Dog was surprised when I pointed to her; he is a beautiful representative of the breed and should, in my opinion, be acknowledged in any ring he enters.

A few of the winners I had judged before and they didn't disappoint. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that I'd given an AOM to the litter sister of my own young boy. Not having seen her for two years I didn't recognize her until the handler told me her call name after I'd placed her. It was also gratifying to see how many half brothers and sisters received AOMs.

1 - Brinson Back To Fall Of Kelcorov - a beautiful puppy with a gorgeous front.

2 - Kansai'z Ferlinka Three Nines - he was quite a bit younger but again had a beautiful front, nicely balanced, just a little bit less mature than the first place puppy

3 - Kalabria Silkenswift Run For The Border - a beautifully-moving puppy with a nice low hock

4 - Katz Okatoma - he was in a bit of a gawky stage but still a lovely puppy.

1 - Maskova's Phantom Rose - over all this puppy was exactly what I was looking for, which was obvious when he went Winners Dog. He had a lovely, flowing sidegait and was just overall my type of Borzoi.

2 - Riverrun Oxota Ket Runtuff - a very nicely-built dog who moved well from the side and didn't do much wrong coming and going.

3 - Howff Carbonel Evolgo Of Avalon - he was a little bit looser than the other puppies and I'd like to see a bit more leg and a little bit more topline but still a beautiful-moving dog.

4 - Mielikki Thieves In The Temple - another beautiful puppy but he wasn't behaving very well coming and going.

1 - Majenkir Bookstor Spellbinder - he was a little out of control at first and has more rear than I prefer but he did use himself very well, with a lovely long sidegait and clean coming and going. Reserve Winners Dog

2 - Silkenswift Sirius Black - I would like a little bit more rear on this dog but he also uses himself really well and was relatively clean coming and going.

4 - Windrift Longshot At Tahoe

These two I really liked on the side and they were pretty good coming and going but they lost a bit because of their tails.

1 - Auroral's Anson - a bit immature, he needs to grow up but he just is my type of dog, in retrospect reminding me of the boy I kept from my Formal litter. I absolutely loved his sidegait and he was great coming and going.

2 - Sylvan Kingfisher - also beautiful dog but didn't have quite as smooth a sidegait. He had a little bit too much activity in his front but it was a very difficult decision between him and the first place dog.

3 - Mielikki Kalabria Riverrun Dark Star - again quite lovely but lost a bit on his sidegait compared to the other placements.

4 - Starswift FV Fierce Allegiance, JC - basically the same characteristics as everybody else in the class, just not quite as much as the preceding dogs. All in all a relatively uniform class.

DOGS, American Bred - CRITIQUE by Helen W. Lee

1 - FC Kirov Strike It Rich At Highpoint, CD, MC, RA, NA, NAJ, NF, LCX, CGC - I'd like to see a bit more rear angulation on this dog but overall he was very pleasing to the eye.

2 - FC Zoiboyz Guinness, SC - he was rather long in the body so lost out to the first place dog, although they moved comparably well.

3 - Ravenna Remembering Kiss - another lovely dog but he was somewhat narrower in the rear than first and second.

4 - Au Amberle's Adsila-Azurill TMC's Hooligan Of Ryhka - he lost out because he toed in somewhat in front.

2 - Kalabria Silkenswift Life With Extra Sprinkles - it was very, very close competition between her and the first place bitch with the other bitch having very slightly better sidegait.

3 - Sojourn Konza Voodoo Child - Very equivalent to the other two, clean coming and going, lovely sidegait and presence.

4 - Nylucha's Candy Carnivale - this was it was a very difficult class as they're all beautiful little puppies, with very little to differentiate one placement from the other. This bitch also moved well.

2 - Meyta Auroral's Audrey - It was a very hard choice between these two. The second-place bitch took my eye immediately but as time went on basically she doesn't have quite as nice an outline standing as the first place bitch. I would take both of them home with me if I could. :>)

3 - Sylvan Amazing Pixie - beautiful going around and nice conformation, just not quite as clean coming and going as previous bitches

4 - Bella Luna Dazzle At Silver Moon - a little underweight but still shows nice quality, clean coming and going just not quite up to the standards of the other three.

1 - Majenkir Thunderstruck White Storm Rising - basically she did nothing wrong, although she's a little bit big for my preference but other than that she was beautiful. WINNERS BITCH

2 - RunTuff Téine New York's In Love - she just had really bad luck to be in this class because she was beautiful too. I almost couldn't fault her. She has nicer ears than the first place bitch but not quite the outline and not quite as smooth going around.

3 - Avalyn's Water Dance - nice low hocks but not quite as smooth going around; very nice coming and going.

4 - Téine RunTuff Suffargette City - lovely as well but again not quite up to the standard of the first three. Another very close class.

A very difficult class to judge; there were some beautiful bitches. It was extremely difficult to compare the first two bitches as they both have very similar qualities

1 - Soyara's Devilish Delilah

2 - Justart Birdsong At Majenkir. The second-place bitch has a slightly better topline standing while the first one's shoulder feels much nicer and she flowed a little bit more easily. This was an extremely difficult class to judge with beautiful bitches.

3 - Sylvan Eleonara - had a tendency to move too quickly, which made her a little bit choppy and I'd like to see a bit more breadth of body. I think part of the problem is she has a little bit more rear than front so not quite as fluid.

4 - Del Sol Firebolt Of Coburn WNS - needs more topline but she's a nice mover. Her feet could be improved but she's very nicely built and moved smoothly and easily.

1 - GCH. Jubilee Glacier Ozlandia, SC- a lovely sound dog which didn't put a foot wrong; lovely shoulder, beautiful upper arm well laid back. A really quality specimen. He got an Award of Merit.

2 - GCH. Attaway-Kinobi Fogarty Creek, JC had a bit of a hitch at first but smoothed out as he moved. A bit long in the body but very smooth sidegait.

3 - CH. Majenkir Bookstor Fyodor Fine Art - very typey but doesn't use himself as well going around as the higher placements. He was slightly chubby too. :>) It turns out he produces better than himself as he went best stud dog and I was amazed to see that a lot of my placements were his get and his full sister was best of breed.

4 - CH. Zharkov Téine Briar, SC - he wouldn't slow down enough to have a smooth sidegait but overall a lovely dog although very slightly toeing in.

Generation Class - CRITIQUE by Steven Evans, Mistraka, Australia

What a huge honour and thrill it was to be asked to judge the Generations Class at this year's BCOA National in Hunt Valley, Maryland.

There were only 2 entries but both were consistent throughout each generation and had breed hallmarks that I was looking for.

In my winner, each exhibit possessed beautiful heads, had balanced fronts and rears and all had good toplines and underlines.

What you want with each generation is to capture what you have with the first generation and then hopefully pass that down and improve it with each generation and I believe my winner showed off this best with a very promising youngster as third generation.

Once again a huge thank you to the Committee for this assignment and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2019 in Lancaster PA

CONFORMATION JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS by Helen W. Lee:

First of all, I want to thank the members of the Borzoi Club of America for electing me to judge this specialty. It's a breeder's dream and it's a judge's dream, especially when it's your own breed. I greatly appreciate their trust in me to evaluate their dogs; it was almost overwhelming. It was an honour and a privilege and I thank them all so much.

I especially want to thank the show committee as well as Phyllis Potter and Karen Mays. Phyllis did a great job as "judges' hospitality" and Karen, as always, was invaluable as my ring steward.

I saw some amazing dogs and put up some which I didn't expect that I would like from photos I'd seen in the past. I also probably didn't put up some which people expected I would like. It's a totally different experience. I can sit at ringside and bitch and complain and critique other judges but when you're standing in the middle of that ring with 300+ entries, it's an extremely difficult job because there were so many dogs that I liked but only so many ribbons to give out.

The ballroom carpet could have been a challenge but I was amazed that I only noticed ONE Borzoi actually hop over the pattern. A few obviously didn't like it but I was expecting a bunch of kangaroo hops and only noticed one.

We do have a few problems in our breed, though. In the past, I've had problems with the fronts on some of my dogs. One of them even moved a bit like a pit bull from the front and a fair number toed in. As a result I'm particularly sensitive to dogs which toe in. When push came to shove and I was down to making final decisions, much as I hate to "fault judge" I had to eliminate some otherwise lovely animals because of that one fault. I was very happy to see that there weren't a whole lot of exhibits with "wonky fronts".

The major problem that we have to work on, though, is rears. In my opinion there are way too many long hocks and narrow rears. When I'm going over a Borzoi I make sure I look down at their back feet before stepping back. If a Borzoi has a good rear, their back feet should be positioned wider than their chest, so a judge needs to be careful not to step on a foot as they back up. There were way too many entries where I could have just backed up without looking because their feet were out of my way. The back legs have to pass their chest when they're running, so a narrow rear will make that more difficult. We have got to get back that breadth of rear. From the hip bones to the pin bones should be a triangular shape, not a rectangle.

We also need to worry about the size of our Borzoi; they are getting much too big, both dogs and bitches. As I was working my way through the various groups of bitches I looked at one set and at first glance had to forcibly remind myself that I did not have to check for testicles. This is NOT good!! Bitches should look like bitches and dogs like dogs. A judge should not ever go to check testicles on a bitch; it should be totally obvious what sex they are.

On the plus side, I saw a lot of beautiful, flowing sidegait. We have definitely improved this aspect of our breed over the years. We also have a lot fewer missing teeth than we had in the past; I saw very few holes in the mouths, although there was one entry which was missing four or more and a few which could have done with a good cleaning. On the whole, though, I was pleased with the mouths on the entries.

I was told once that someone didn't enter under me because they didn't think I'd like a dark Borzoi. Not true. :>) I've had every colour of Borzoi there is. If a Borzoi is well built and moves smoothly, I don't care if it's purple with pink polka dots - I will put it up … as long as the purple is not dyed. Even though a lot of the winners were "white" I'm not really all that fond of "whites" at all; it's just that so many of them moved the way I like. As I told a fellow breeder years ago: just because I have a bunch of (whatever colour or type of) Borzoi doesn't necessarily mean it's my favourite. It could mean that I just can't get (or breed) my favourite colour or type. In my first few litters I kept whites or cream and whites because they were the best puppies, NOT because of their colour. In truth, my absolute favourite colour is tortoiseshell (as we call them in Canada; Americans call them sables).

There were some classes which were difficult to judge because the quality of the entries was so uniform and other classes which had an easy standout. As long as we work on size and rears, the Borzoi breed is definitely going in the right direction.

SWEEPSTAKES JUDGE'S GENERAL COMMENTS:

Once again, I would like to thank the BCOA membership for this wonderful opportunity to judge Sweepstakes at this year's National Specialty.

Overall, I found the puppies and veterans in wonderful condition. It was delightful to see the handlers playing with their dogs and enjoying the experience. Especially for puppies. It is so important to have a positive ring experience. Win or lose it must remain fun for them.

As breeders, we still need to work on improving our fronts. I found too many short and very straight upper arms. There were some dogs that were very narrow. Think of what the Borzoi was bred for. They need lung capacity, they need a structure that will carry them for long distances. In a few puppies, I found a very short rib cage. Not in depth but in the overall length of the rib cage. The rib cage cut up abruptly. I used to see this back in the 70s. This does not lend itself to a good lung capacity of a running hound. And lastly, teeth. Dentition overall was good but I did see a few narrow underjaws which caused the bottom teeth to end up in a V formation. Again, we are dealing with a hound that should be able to hold game. A few missing premolars will not prevent a hound from catching its prey but a weak underjaw will be useless in the hold.
